A Lesson Learned

A couple days I posted about the message I heard at church Sunday morning dealing with being content with your own life (concerning monetary and material possessions)... Yesterday I was presented with something that taught me an unbelievable, slap-ya-in-the-face lesson in this very subject...

I will openly admit that I have spent days dreaming about taking a tropical vacation with my husband. (and gloomy, rainy, cold days like today don't help) I have been very fortunate to have visited some locations that were absolutely beautiful, but D has never been out of the country to a tropical location. We know we want to take our honeymoon to a beautiful beach, but the timing for a trip like that has not worked out yet and that is completely okay.

I sat at work yesterday in the break room and my phone rings... it's a number I do not recognize and always am hesitant to answer... one of the girls said "just answer it, you never know who it will be..." and here it begins...

The woman on the phone informs me that she has just spoken to my husband on the phone and she is so excited to inform me that we have won a huge vacation package from something we filled out when we attended the boat show at the beginning of February... As she starts to list the LENGTHY "winnings" and variety of vacation options that sound incredible I started to panic... What should I do? I can't possibly pass this up, right? I mean, we have been wanting to take an awesome vacation and here's our shot... we would be silly to say no... So I had one of the girls at work call D from their phone so I could get some feedback from him on what his thoughts were... I informed the woman that I could not make a decision without thoroughly discussing it with my husband... she said she understood and offered to call him on a conference call... So here we sit on a 3-way phone call... D's at work... I'm at work... and this travel agent is waiting for us to accept a dream vacation offer... What do we do?

At this point D calls me on another phone so we can "privately" discuss our feelings while having the travel agent on mute... We both felt like this could be too good to be true, but then again... someone has to win these things right??

So before I know it... D agrees... they congratulate us... and that was that... now we just have to wait for our vouchers to arrive and decide when & where we want to go first...

I went on with my work day... and I just knew something wasn't right... I drove home from work and was literally sick to my stomach over this... I got home and was anxious to talk to D... and before I could open my mouth he met me at the door and said... "I don't know about this babe.."

We did more and more research just like we did earlier and everything was checking out fine... but something just wasn't sitting well with either of us...

Now here's the crazy part... D looked at me and said, "Kel wasn't the lesson in church about being content and not always wanting for more?? I think this is a big temptation, and I feel like we shouldn't fall into it"... This whole package could easily be legit or a scam... who are we to know 100%... but all we do know is it didn't feel right...

We put things into perspective... we are young, we both have great jobs, we own our beautiful home, we are happy & healthy, we just bought a new, amazing boat... and we still think we need more right now?? Talk about an eye opener...

We immediately called the travel agency back and said we would like to decline their offer... and we both felt so much better... now if this was a scam, luckily SOMEONE was watching out for us (and taught us a lesson)... but if it turns out to be a real offer hopefully it gets passed onto some family that could really, truly enjoy & benefit from it...

Now I'm not saying that D & I will never take a tropical vacation... because we definitely plan on doing so when the timing is right... however something about this just did not seem like it was meant to be... and we know we always grow from lessons learned :)
